Stallion Giligan's tramples Navy; Nomads wins

MANILA, Philippines – Stallion Giligan's FC leaned on a hat trick by Korean striker Lee Joo Young as it overpowered a rough-playing Philippine Navy Red Juice side, 6-0, to seize the early lead in the United Football League competition at the University of the Makati pitch today.

With Philippine Football Federation president Nonong Araneta in attendance, winger Yoon Byeong Jun opened up the scoring with a scrambling goal inside the box just nine minutes into the game. Lee then came through with three straight goals on the 33rd, 50th and 75th to put the game away.

Midfielder Park Bo Bae, now plying his trade here after postponing his retirement from the Korean division one league, and substitute Jimmy Vergara, Jr. joined the scoring parade with goals on the 77th and 84th minute, respectively, to complete the carnage.

It was spectacular Division One debut for the Iloilo-based Stallion, which tied opening day winners LBC-backed Kaya FC and Loyola Meralco Sparks at the helm but seized the top spot on goal differential thanks their six goals.

Kaya FC, mentored by locally based Spanish Juan Cutillas, set in motion its title bid by stunning reigning League and Cup champion Air Force, 1-0, while the Sparks, spearheaded by Phil and James Younghusband, escaped with 3-2 win over a stubborn Hans Smith-coached Green Archers United.

"Maybe they should change the top four teams and include us in that list," said Stallion manager Ernest Nierras, referring to experts' prediction that the title race will be a four-cornered fight among Loyola, Air Force, Global FC and Kaya FC.

UFL: Army stuns Global, 2-1

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Army Fritz and Macziol played David in pulling the rug from under the Goliath in Global with a stunning 2-1 victory to jumpstart its campaign in the United Football League at the Nomads football pitch in Paranaque over the weekend.

Relan Bretana, a 25-year-old product of the country's center of football universe in Barotac Nueva, Iloilo, blasted in two goals, one in each half, to give the Army men enough cushion to weather Global's late, desperate attempt at turning things around.

The stunning win sent Army into the win column with three points alongside opening day winners LBC-backed Kaya and Loyola Meralco Sparks and Stallion Gilligan's FC and Nomads Auction Manila FC.

It also avenged Army's painful setback at the hands of the Dan Palami-owned Global, the runner-up in last year's edition, in the Round-of-16 of the Cup where the latter wound up third late last year.

Most importantly, the win gave the Armed Forces something to proud of as it made up for heartbreaking losses by Air Force Phoenix, the reigning Cup and League champion, to Kaya, 0-1, at the Rizal pitch Saturday and by Navy to Stallions, 0-6, at the UMak Sunday.

"I would like to thank our superiors for allowing us to give more time on training. It really helped us to focus on the league," said Army team captain and Azkals member Roel Gener in Filipino.

UFL: Nomads come from behind to beat Pasargad

Nomads Auction Manila FC recorded their first win in division one as they defeated Pasargad FC 3-2 yesterday at the University of Makati stadium.

In a match that was mostly characterized by the difference in height, with the Nomads towering over their Pasargad rivals, things became heated on and off the pitch at times, but the Nomads did enough to pick up the victory.

The game got off to a quick start as the Nomads took the lead through Randy Musters at the 12th minute. Pasargad equalized two minutes later through Charlie Sutcliffe, before taking the lead as Jay Torres scored only two minutes later again.

The bold start for both sides seemed to have settled down before Nomads then equalized just before half-time, with a corner finding Yves De Luis who headed to bring Nomads level.

Stallions triumph

MANILA, Philippines — Korean Joo Young Lee scored a rare hat trick Sunday as Stallion Giligan's FC blasted Navy Red Juice, 6-0, in the United Football League at the University of Makati Field.

Lee scored in the 33rd, 50th and 75th minutes as the Stallions got off to a rousing start in the first division tournament.

The Ernie Nierras-coached Stallions finished second to Nomads in last year's second division and made the quarterfinals of the recently-concluded UFL Cup.

Other goal scorers for the team were Byeong Jun Yoon (19th), Bo Bae Park (77th) and Jomar Lestingio (84th).

Stallion Giligan's joined Kaya FC and the Loyola Meralco Sparks in the list of opening weekend winner.

Just European tournaments, the champion of the tournament will be determined through the most number of points after the end of the 18-game schedule.

Kaya stuns Air Force in UFL opener

MANILA, Philippines - LBC-backed Kaya FC leaned on an early goal by Ivory Coast’s Eric Dagroh and then hung tough the rest of the way to eke out a 1-0 win over reigning league and Cup champion Air Force Phoenix to set in motion its title bid in the United Football League competition before a huge weekend crowd at the Rizal Memorial football pitch. Dagroh, a 22-year-old midfielder who plied his trade in India and Thailand before suiting up with Kaya, set the tone early as he tapped in a missed header by Japanese Masanari Omura off a cross from Liberian Prince Boley right four minutes into the match. It turned out the one and only goal for the match as Kaya, which finished fourth in the UFL Cup late last year, made up for several missed chances by coming out solid enough in defense to snare the first win, good for three points, of the first Division One game of the UFL tournament patterned after the English Premiership.

UFL 2012: Phil's two goals help Sparks beat Green Archers FC

Loyola Meralco forward Phil Younghusband scored two goals before the Sparks staved off a late comeback try by Green Archers FC in a 3-2 win Saturday in the United Football League (UFL) at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Younghusband connected in the 35th and 45th minute for a 2-0 halftime led, while Byeong Yeol Jeong made it 3-0 in the 53rd.

Green Archers United, however, made the match interesting when Loyola went down to 10 men when Taku Yoshioka was given a red card midway in the second half.

An Arnie Pasinabo 67th-minute goal put Green Archers FC on the board while a Reynald Villareal header in the 77th cut the deficit to one.

But Loyola Meralco Sparks got the needed breaks when goalkeeper Ref Delaney Cuaresma made a big save in the 84th minute of the match on a Green Archers attack.

PFF to sign P300-M pact with ABS-CBN

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Football Federation is poised to sign a four-year extension worth at least P300 million with television giant ABS-CBN for the airing of matches of the men’s national team as well as its football activities starting this year.

PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta Friday night said the federation will also stand to receive P1.2 million per Azkals match from the network, which is also required to give P1 million worth of football equipment that will be divided among its 33 member-associations.

“They (ABS-CBN) had a better offer,” said Araneta. TV5 also tabled an offer to the PFF but the Federation’s Board opted for ABS-CBN, which held the rights to Azkals matches starting last year during the AFC Challenge Cup.

The PFF board has authorized Araneta and Azkals manager Dan Palami to negotiate with ABS-CBN before finalizing the contract.

Meanwhile, Araneta said that the PFF has ratified the appointment of NCRFA president Rolly Tulay as general secretary, replacing Chito Manuel, who will be assigned to the PFF’s grassroots committee.
